Bypass Flow Equation

One of the current requirements is to keep the flow in the Youghiogheny at the tailrace at 40cfs. This is accomplished by measuring the flow in the Yough at Oakland and augment that flow using the bypass valve setting. The setting is expressed as a percentage. The required bypass valve setting depends on the following relationship [1] (my interpretation; to be verified).

The characteristics of the bypass flow are modeled by the following equation:

  • Q = y = -13.816 + 0.72199 * V
  • Q = bypass flow, cfs
  • V = valve setting, %
